The Roots Programme in Stoke-on-Trent: Honest Conversations Around the Community Table
As part of our ongoing series of Community Conversations, The Roots Programme joined our friends at All the Small Things CIC in Stoke-on-Trent to co-host a discussion at YMCA North Staffordshire following their monthly community meal.
The afternoon brought together around 40 residents from a wide range of ages and backgrounds to explore Roots’ Keep, Scrap, Reimagine model – a framework that encourages people to reflect on what they value in their community, what needs to change, and what might be reimagined.
Over shared food and conversation, residents spoke candidly about life in Stoke – the pride in its heritage, the challenges facing Hanley’s town centre, and the desire to preserve the close-knit feel of its six towns. Discussions touched on issues such as housing, crime and transport, alongside ideas for how the community can create positive change together. Many recognised the power of the regular community meal in bringing people together.
The lunch also welcomed around 75 members of ASHA, a local organisation supporting asylum seekers. The topic of immigration arose naturally, reflecting the real-world conversations shaping the city and how communities can remain connected and compassionate amid change.
The event was open, honest and rooted in everyday experience – capturing what these gatherings are all about: real people, brave dialogue, and genuine connection.
Stoke’s conversation included the community pc, a local vicar, a foster mum, a 90-year-old Stoke resident with stories for miles…and so many more brilliant local experts, old-timers and recent arrivals – brains all ticking around the tables. The neighbourhood is not without its deep issues and burning tensions, but there’s a tangible community spirit and willingness to talk that the rest of the country could do well to learn from.

This work also reflects the shared values of Roots and our sister organisation Rekindle with whom we will be working very closely soon- learning from lived experience, nurturing curiosity and compassion, and creating spaces where community voice drives change.
